Vaccination recommendations in Patients with Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases

The American College of Rheumatology recently revised its 2022 Guidelines for Vaccination of patients with Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal diseases (RMD).  Our practice supports these recommendations which are constantly being updated.  We do not have specific expertise in the area of vaccines and acknowledge that recieving vaccinations is ultimately a personal choice. Some of these recommendations are shown below.  Here is the Full Summary and the full Guideline.

Summary of Recommendations

  1. For RMD patients aged ≥ 65 years, and RMD patients aged >18 and <65 years who are on immunosuppressive medication, giving high-dose or adjuvanted influenza vaccination is conditionally recommended over giving regular-dose influenza vaccination.

  2. For patients with RMD aged <65 years who are on immunosuppressive medication, pneumococcal vaccination is strongly recommended.

  3. For patients with RMD aged >18 years who are on immunosuppressive medication, administering the recombinant zoster vaccine is strongly recommended.
